Moving from Provisional to Full Registration

If you are provisionally registered with Graduate Competence, your competence certificate will have one of two expiry dates.  Either 30 November or 30 June.  This depends on when you completed your qualification.  The SWRB will email you three months prior to your Graduate Competence expiry date to remind you it is about to expire.

PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to have completed your hours to complete a competence assessment.

If you are Provisional Registration with Graduate Competence and you are wanting/needing to move to Full Registration you will need to follow these steps:

Step 1: Complete a Competence Assessment, this involves you submitting:

  • Competence Assessment Application Forms

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Log

Continuing Professional Development Log 1819

The log should begin from the time you were first registered and you need to evidence a minimum of two core competence standards per year.  A requirement of Registration is maintaining a minimum of 20 hours of CPD EACH year.

  • Fee: $75.00

Your Full Competence Certificate needs to be in place on or before the expiry date of your Graduate Competence to maintain your registration. You must also allow for processing time. Any Competence assessment applications received after 5pm on a Thursday, will not be processed until the following week.  We recommend submitting a competence assessment at least 3-4 weeks prior to your expiry date to allow enough time for processing and to avoid your APC/registration from becoming invalid.

Your competence assessment application and full payment need to be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to your current competence expiry date.  We will not process any application until it is paid for in full. You can email your competence assessment in a PDF format to

Step 2: If you have completed your 2000 hours of supervised social work practice in New Zealand post qualification, please have your manager/supervisor complete the form below. You can be Provisional Registered up to 8 years whilst you complete your hours but your competence must be renewed on time.
