The Social Workers Registration Board is improving the registration application process for New Zealand-qualified social workers.
The changes are designed to make the process clearer, easier to use, and more complete before an application is submitted.
From 14 August 2026, applicants will need to provide all required information and supporting documents, and pay the registration fee, before submitting their application.
This will help applicants understand what is needed upfront and reduce delays caused by missing or incomplete information.
What is changing?
To support applicants through the process, the key changes include:
- an automated online application submission
- requirement of all supporting documents before an application can be submitted
- full payment of the registration fee at the time of application
- helpful prompts to progress an application
- new verification requirements for applicants who have spent 3 months or longer overseas.
1. Complete your application before submitting
You will need to provide all the required information and supporting documents before you can submit your application. This information helps us assess whether you can practise as a social worker and reduces delays caused by incomplete applications or missing information.
There is no time limit to complete and submit an application. Applicants can start an application, including uploading their supporting documents, and complete it in their own time.
2. Pay the registration fee when you apply
Previously, New Zealand-qualified applicants could submit a registration application and had 6 months to pay the full fee. This application process required the full payment before it could be considered.
From 14 August 2026, these applicants will need to pay the registration fee to submit an application for consideration.
Why we are making these changes
These improvements are intended to give applicants greater clarity and confidence as they move through the registration process, while supporting us to carry out our public protection responsibilities effectively.
They will:
- make it clearer what you need to provide before you apply
- help you submit your information with confidence
- reduce delays caused by missing or incomplete information
- support more efficient assessment when complete information is provided upfront and no additional concerns require investigation.
When applicants provide complete information upfront and no additional concerns require investigation, applications can move through assessment more efficiently.
Our aim is to make the process easier to navigate while continuing to uphold the standards and safeguards that support public trust and confidence in the social work profession.
