Moving from Provisional to Full Registration

If you are provisionally registered with Graduate Competence, your competence certificate will have one of two expiry dates.  Either 30 November or 30 June.  This depends on when you completed your qualification.  The SWRB will email you three months prior to your Graduate Competence expiry date to remind you it is about to expire.

PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to have completed your hours to complete a competence assessment.

If you are Provisional Registration with Graduate Competence and you are wanting/needing to move to Full Registration you will need to follow these steps:

Step 1: Complete a Full Competence Assessment, this involves you submitting:

  • Competence Assessment Application Forms
  • Self-Reflection Template
  • Practice Study Template
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Log. The log should begin from the time you were first registered. A requirement of Registration is maintaining a minimum of 20 Hours of CPD EACH year
  • Fee: $255.55

Your Full Competence Certificate needs to be in place on or before the expiry date of your Graduate Competence to maintain your registration. You must also allow for processing time. Competence assessments are sent out every Friday to our external assessors who have two weeks to assess and return them. Any Competence assessment applications received after 5pm on a Thursday, will not be processed until the following week.  We recommend submitting a competence assessment 4-6 weeks prior to your expiry date to allow enough time for processing and to avoid your APC/registration from becoming cancelled. Click here to take you to the full competence page for the above documents.

We recommend submitting your competence assessment application and full payment at least four – six weeks prior to your current competence expiry date.  From 1 April 2018 we will not be processing any applications until they are paid for in full. You can email your competence assessment application in a PDF format to comp@swrb.govt.nz

All competence assessment applications are sent to external assessors on a Friday.  If your competence assessment application and payment is received after 5pm on a Thursday, it will not be processed until the following week.

Step 2: If you have completed your 2000 hours of supervised social work practice in New Zealand post qualification, please have your manager/supervisor complete the form below. You can be Provisional Registered up to 8 Years whilst you complete your hours but your competence must be renewed on time.
